I was introduced to picture books without words during my previous job as a teacher. I hear some advantages to it, like, encouraging kids to describe the pictures that they saw, promoting a good opportunity to have open-ended discussion about the pictures, etc.
Thus, I created a open the flap picture book without words recently, coupled with a dice.
Here is what I am targeting at:
- Animal Names
- Vehicle Names
- Action word, "Throw", "Open" (Following Instructions)
Who is it for?
- Playgroup (~ 3 years old, small group)
Why do I have this idea?
1) Most kids of this age group might not be able to read Chinese characters yet, e.g. the names of vehicles and animals. Thus, I don't think adding words in the book is important for now, which is why I created this book without words.
2) Kids of this age group likes hands-on activities, thus, I thought getting them to throw a dice and opening the flaps of the book would be fun for them.
Activity:
1) The book, "Who is the driver? (谁是司机?)will be introduced to kids.
2) Kids will take turns to throw the dice.
3) After the dice is thrown, teacher will say the name of the vehicle shown on the dice.
4) The kid who throw the dice will flip the book to find the vehicle that corresponds to the picture shown on the dice.
5) After that, the kid will open the flap to reveal the animal who is driving the vehicle. Teacher will say the name of the animal who drives the vehicle.
I hope that apart from those goals that I had targeted above, this activity will engage the kids during storytelling session and they will find flipping through a book fun for a start. :)
